Senior Phase

National Qualifications in Art and Design provide learners with a broad, practical experience of art and design practice and related critical activities.

Learners develop practical skills as they explore how to visually represent and communicate their thoughts and ideas through their work, and study the works of artists and designers.

National 3, National 4, National 5, Higher, Advanced Higher

Entry level will depend on enthusiasm, ability, creativity and ability to work hard in class and at home. As a guide the following entry levels are normally used:

National 3                       at the center’s discretion      Expressive and Design units

National 4                       at the center’s discretion      Expressive and Design folios

National 5                       at the center’s discretion      Expressive and Design folios and Critical exam

Higher                              Grade A or B at National 5    Expressive and Design folios and Critical exam

Advanced Higher           Grade A or B at Higher          Expressive OR Design folio and Critical Essay

To cope with the Critical demands of the National 5 and Higher course it is essential to have passed or be working toward a pass in National 5 or Higher English. A detailed Career pathway list can be found on the Art & Design section of the school website.

The National 3 Course encourages learners to experiment with and use a variety of art and design materials, techniques and/or technology.

The Course offers learners opportunities to develop their practical skills at a basic level by communicating their thoughts and ideas when creating expressive and design work Further, it offers learners opportunities to develop basic knowledge and understanding of art and design practice.

The National 4 Art and Design Course enables learners to plan, develop, produce and present creative art and design work, and to develop an understanding of the social and cultural influences on the works of artists and designers. The Course is practical and experiential and the key focus is creativity. The Course combines developing knowledge and understanding of artists and designers and their work, with practical learning experiences in both expressive and design contexts. The Course encourages learners to experiment with using art and design materials, be imaginative, creative, think critically and apply practical skills in response to art and design activities. 

The National 5 Art and Design Course enables learners to plan, develop, produce and present creative art & design work, and to develop their critical understanding of a range of art and design practice. The Course also enables learners to understand the impact of external factors on artists and designers and their works. Learning in the Course will develop knowledge of art and design practice and a range of practical media handling skills in both expressive and design contexts. The Course encourages learners to exercise imagination and creativity. It helps learners to be creative and to express themselves confidently in different ways. Learning in the Course will include active involvement in creative activities and the use of a range of art and design materials, techniques and/or technology. Learning through art and design also develops learners’ ability to critically appreciate aesthetic and cultural values, identities and ideas. 

The Higher Art and Design Course enables learners to communicate personal thoughts, feelings and ideas through the creative use of art and design materials, techniques and/or technology. Learners analyze a range of art and design practice and critically reflect on the impact of external factors on artists, designers and their work. They plan, develop, produce and present creative art and design work, develop personal creativity, and use problem solving, critical thinking and reflective practice skills. At this level, learners will show increasing personal autonomy and creative decision making when agreeing the content and context of their work. The Course allows learners to broaden and deepen their skills base, to widen their horizons regarding a range of vocations and careers and to develop attributes and capabilities of the four capacities. Throughout the Course, learners will develop perseverance, independence and resilience as they take increasing responsibility for directing their learning, thus enhancing their self-confidence and enterprise skills.  

The Advanced Higher Art and Design (Design) Course provides opportunities for learners to develop their creativity and apply their understanding of design practice, function and aesthetics. This involves exploring and researching challenging design contexts, issues and opportunities, and evaluating and incorporating visual stimuli and other information from a variety of sources. The Course provides opportunities for personalisation and choice in selecting a creative and personally challenging context for self-directed learning. It allows learners to broaden and extend their creativity, design-based problem solving and critical thinking skills and to work independently. This distinct focus on sustained self-directed learning is part of the Course’s unique contribution to learners’ creative development.
 

The Advanced Higher Art and Design (Expressive) Course provides opportunities for learners to develop their creativity, visual awareness and understanding of aesthetic, while exploring how to communicate their personal thoughts, ideas and opinions through their expressive artwork. This involves visually exploring and responding in an individual way to stimuli, researching challenging expressive art contexts and evaluating how artists respond creatively to stimuli. The Course provides opportunities for personalisation and choice by allowing learners to select creative and challenging contexts for self-directed learning. It allows learners to broaden and extend their creativity and critical thinking skills and to work independently in an area of personal interest. This distinct focus on sustained self-directed learning is part of the Course’s unique contribution to the learner’s creative expressive development.
